Are Mini Splits Energy Efficient?

What Are Mini Split Systems?

Mini split systems, also known as ductless heating and cooling systems, are a modern solution for regulating the temperature within homes and businesses. These systems are composed of an outdoor compressor and typically one or more indoor air-handling units. With their sleek design and quiet operation, mini split systems have gained substantial popularity due to their versatility in heating and cooling individual rooms or zones. Their growth in preference can be attributed to the increased demand for cost-effective and energy-efficient temperature solutions.

Understanding Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency refers to the process of reducing the amount of energy required to perform a specific function or task. An energy-efficient appliance or system achieves the same results using less energy, which results in lower energy bills and less environmental impact.

Energy efficiency is critical for several reasons. First, it reduces the demand for electricity, thus conserving limited natural resources. Second, it contributes significantly to environmental sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy production. Lastly, energy efficiency can lead to substantial cost savings over time, making it a financially prudent choice for householders and businesses alike. In the context of mini split systems, energy efficiency means providing optimal heating and cooling performance while consuming less energy.

Factors Affecting Efficiency

Several factors influence the energy efficiency of mini split systems. Understanding these factors can equip users to make more informed decisions when purchasing and utilizing these systems.

  • Size of the system: The size of the mini split system, in terms of its heating and cooling capacity, greatly impacts its energy efficiency. A system that is too small may need to work harder to heat or cool a room, resulting in higher energy consumption. Conversely, a system that is too large may lead to unnecessary energy expenditure.
  • Quality of Installation: The efficiency of a mini split system can also be affected by the quality of its installation. Proper installation by a professional can ensure optimal functioning and maximum energy efficiency.
  • Maintenance: Regular maintenance of the system is crucial to its energy efficiency. Cleaning and replacing filters, as well as regular inspections, can help maintain the system's efficiency over time.
  • Usage patterns: The way the system is used can affect its energy efficiency. For instance, constantly adjusting the temperature settings or leaving the system on when not in use can lead to increased energy consumption.
  • Energy efficiency rating: Each mini split unit comes with an energy efficiency rating, known as a SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating. Higher SEER ratings indicate greater energy efficiency.

How Do Mini Split Systems Compare to Traditional HVAC Systems?

Comparing mini split systems with traditional HVAC systems provides a clearer understanding of their respective energy efficiencies. Traditional HVAC systems refer to centralized heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems that use ductwork to distribute conditioned air throughout a building. These systems are often efficient for larger buildings but may not be optimal for smaller spaces or individual rooms.

Energy Consumption: Mini split systems generally consume less energy than conventional HVAC systems. This is primarily because ductless systems eliminate the energy losses associated with ductwork, which can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for space conditioning, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space such as an attic.

Operational Efficiency: Mini splits can heat or cool specific zones or rooms to the exact degree, ensuring no energy is wasted on unoccupied or seldom-used spaces. In contrast, traditional HVAC systems treat the entire building as a single unit, leading to potential energy waste.

SEER Ratings: Typically, mini split systems have higher SEER ratings than traditional HVAC systems, indicating better energy efficiency. While the SEER ratings for traditional HVAC systems often range from 13 to 16, those for mini split systems can reach up to 33.

Flexibility and Control: The flexibility of mini split systems allows for better control over temperature settings in individual rooms, leading to optimized energy usage. Traditional HVAC systems, on the other hand, control the temperature of an entire building, which can result in less efficient energy use.

Installation and Maintenance: Installation of mini split systems is usually less complex and invasive than that of traditional HVAC systems. This can result in less energy expenditure during installation. Additionally, maintenance of mini split systems tends to be simpler and less frequent, further contributing to their overall energy efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions or can't find the answer you need? Give us a call at 603-733-4594 today!

  • What kind of filter should I use, and when should I change it?

It depends on the type of HVAC system you have. Usually 1” Pleated Media MERV 8 filters work best, however you must be sure the HVAC system has enough static pressure available to support the pressure loss for the air filter you utilize. Follow the manufacturers guidelines regarding air filter choice and change frequency.

  • What temperature should I set my thermostat at?

There are many opinions on what temperature to set your thermostat to. Remember, comfort always trumps energy savings. If using a hyper-heat system, we suggest you “set it and forget it.” It makes no sense to roll back your thermostat to save energy use when you are at work for the day only to return home and make your HVAC system work harder (using more energy) to get you comfortable. In fact, it uses more energy and wears on the system components quicker. You didn’t unplug your refrigerator when you went to work in the morning so why would you unplug your HVAC system to try to save energy?

  • What are the benefits of having a maintenance plan?
    • With regular inspections, small problems can be identified and dealt with before they become big problems
    • Prioritized response to service needs
    • Lower energy use
    • Longer system service life
    • Not having to do the maintenance yourself
    • Any future warranty claims require documentation of regular maintenance
